Listen "In The Know - Valley Assistance Services with Chris Erickson and Allie (Aired 11/10/2025)"
Episode Synopsis
On this week’s In The Know, host Andy Taylor welcomes Chris Erickson, Executive Director of Valley Assistance Services (VAS), and Allie, Workforce Advocate, to highlight the critical services VAS provides to the Green Valley–Sahuarita community. Chris explains that recent cuts to direct client assistance programs have driven VAS to expand community fundraising efforts. One of those upcoming events is their lively Hoedown fundraiser, happening January 10th at the Longhorn Grill & Saloon in Amado. Tickets will soon be available at several local partner locations, including the Chamber of Commerce, Nancy Pants, and Posada Java.During the conversation, Chris outlines the scope of VAS, which blends community health and social services. Serving approximately 7,700 individuals every year, VAS receives around 100 calls a day from residents seeking help with essential needs such as emergency rent and utility assistance. Beyond crisis response, VAS focuses on prevention and long-term stability through programs that promote financial literacy, benefit advocacy, and workforce readiness.Allie shares details about a new initiative, “Step Back Into Success,” a workforce program designed specifically to help seniors reenter employment. Participants learn how to update resumes, search and apply for jobs online, dress for interviews, and stay safe while navigating digital platforms. Many seniors are unfamiliar with basic online processes—such as uploading a PDF—and the program provides one-on-one guidance to build confidence and independence.Chris also reveals a brand-new resource coming soon: the Valley Community Caring Cupboard, a dedicated room being remodeled to distribute essential household items not covered by SNAP/EBT benefits. To support the cupboard, VAS is placing large blue donation buckets around town at partner businesses. Volunteers are needed for several efforts, including the Caring Cupboard, the Senior Stocking Program in December, workforce coaching, and the popular Empty Bowls event in February.
