Listen "White Sox Fire Hall of Famer Collins, Hire Lau"
Episode Synopsis
On November 12, 1926, the Chicago White Sox made a surprising move, firing their player-manager, Eddie Collins, without a phone call. Despite his impressive three hundred forty-four batting average, Collins managerial skills were criticized. He was replaced by catcher Ray Schalk, who also took on the role of player-manager. Collins quickly found a new home with the Philadelphia Athletics, where he had another outstanding season. Meanwhile, Schalks tenure as manager was unsuccessful. Fast forward to 1981, the White Sox hired Charley Lau as their batting coach with a six-year contract. Lau was renowned for his hitting approach, detailed in his book, The Art of Hitting Three Hundred. However, his time with the White Sox was cut short when he passed away from colon cancer before the 1984 season. In a lasting tribute, the White Sox have unofficially retired his number six.The Daily News Now! — Every city. Every story. AI-powered. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
