Episode Synopsis

CELLULOID DREAMS 10/3/24

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Audacity, style and brilliance.

A handful of directors defined cinema of the 1970s and early 1980s-- among them Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola. Unlike them, Brian DePalma charted his own course with a string of unique, genre-bending films that set the DePalma style mixing sexuality, humor and violence. In his book THE DEPALMA DECADE: REDEFINING CINEMA WITH DOUBLES, VOYEURS AND PSYCHIC TEENS, award-winning filmmaker and author (and our sole guest) Laurent Bouzereau focuses on seven of the director's titles: SISTERS, PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, OBSESSION, CARRIE, THE FURY, DRESSED TO KILL and BLOW OUT.

Plus, XL "Screen Scene" movie reviews (in theaters, if not specified) including WOLFS [Apple TV+]; MEGALOPOLIS; A DIFFERENT MAN; THE WILD ROBOT; HOLD YOUR BREATH; THE OUTRUN; WHITE BIRD; ME, MYSELF & THE VOID [VoD]; YOU ARE NOT ALONE (1978) [Altered Innocence]; THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK [Arrow Video]; CALIGULA: THE ULTIMATE CUT [Unobstructed View]; THE MUMMY AND THE CURSE OF THE JACKALS (1969) [Severin Films]; THE CREATURE (La Criatura—1977) [Severin Films] and A DOG CALLED... VENGEANCE (1977) [Severin Films].
