This sermon we begin a series, “New Life in Christ,” based on Romans 5-8. “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1)  
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says that He did not come to do away with the law. In Romans, Paul says that the law was not an end in itself but served to bring us to Christ. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus stresses the importance of obedience. In Romans, Paul stresses that we are not made right with God by our obedience. These two parts of Scripture are not contradictory; God knows that we need both emphases. So as we shift from a study of “The Greatest Sermon Ever Preached” to “The Greatest Letter Ever Written,” let’s ask God’s help in living a balanced theology.
