An astral projection usually involves an intentional effort to send your consciousness from your body. It usually refers to your consciousness traveling out of your body towards an object of one's awareness or dream by interacting or taking control of that particular object within the awareness or dream so that you can get a better gauge of your well-being and also help another version of self by using the magic of the awareness to manifest what you want, need and desire instantly,  even if you happen to be in different experiences, through reference points in space.
