Episode Synopsis

ABOUT THE POEM: The poem THE MUSIC OF DELIVERANCE portrays a scene of poverty and yearning for a better life. A slender woman’s husband, wearing only a few bangles — a subtle sign of hardship — speaks of their struggles and dreams. He addresses his dear wife directly and laments: I see your slender arms adorned with just a few bangles — silent witnesses to our poverty. Each day, we live on nothing more than thin gruel, and it pains me to watch you bear this hardship. I think of the great battlefields where mighty elephants once clashed and where proud warriors, their hair tied high, still stand unyielding in distant enemy lands. Looking at their courage, I feel a stirring within me — why should we remain trapped in this life of want? Let us take yazh (harp), parai (small drum), and makkinai (percussion) — the companions of our art — and set forth once again. Perhaps through our music we can earn our livelihood, win honour among noble kings, and free ourselves from this struggle. He concludes by saying It is not a mere escape I seek but a life of dignity — where melody, courage and hope lead us beyond hunger and despair.THE MUSIC OF DELIVERANCEO slender one, with only a few bangles clasped upon your arm!In the vast plains where elephants clashed in battle,In the enemy’s land — where hawks, circling high,Are hindered mid-flight by shreds of fresh green flesh —There stands the warrior chief, his noble hair bound in a lofty knot.Shall we then,To free ourselves from this meagre lifeOf thin gruel and want,Take up the sweet yazh,The small parai drum,And the one-sided makkinai,And set forth —To seek our fortuneIn the courts of kingsWho prize the music of courage and song alike?PURANANURU - 64POET: NEDUMPALLIYATHANARPATRON: PANDYAN PALYAGASALAI MUDUKUDUMI PERUVALUTHI
