KANTATA - IT'S HIGH TIME NOW

‘It’s not enough just to play music. You have to hear music, see music, smell music’. Thus Lee Dodou, leader and all-round Main Man of Kantata. Although most sources quote George Darko’s 1983 hit Akoo Te Brofo as the first ‘true’ Burger highlife recording, it’s worth remembering that it was actually Lee Dodou whose voice and guitar also graced that recording. So: who truly had the first Burger hit: George- or Lee? It’s a controversy that has raged down the years in Highlife circles.

This Asona album is replete with Highlife legends old and new: Chief Kwame (Highlife Time, Asiko); kit drummer Ekow Browne (Pat Thomas & Marijata); Nigerian guitar legend Oghene Kologbo (Fela Kuti, Afrika 70); percussionist Fouad Amoo, of the cult Afrobeat-roots-reggae band Dunia; and several others.

Production- as with all these Asona/BBE Africa reissues- was by the late Anthony Frempong.

Go-to track is Monsom, a gospel-funk-highlife killer, pretty unique- even among the Burger genre itself.
