Listen "How are immigration crackdowns affecting Texas restaurants?"
Episode Synopsis
Across Texas, restaurants are struggling to keep their doors open as immigration crackdowns and increased enforcement continue to impact the workforce.
Highly visible ICE raids and the fear of deportation are causing widespread absenteeism, leaving many businesses short-staffed and unable to meet demand.
According to the Texas Restaurant Association, nearly half of restaurants in our state are dealing with job openings that are difficult to fill, and the worker shortage is only getting worse.
With immigrants making up roughly 22% of Texas’ restaurant workforce — not including undocumented workers, whose numbers are harder to track--the industry is facing a critical labor challenge.
On Ask the Expert, Dr. Emily Williams Knight, the President and CEO of the Texas Restaurant Association, joined KRLD to discuss how this issue is affecting restaurant owners, employees, and the communities they serve.
