Listen "Max Elbaum on MAGA, Gaza, and the 2024 Election"
Episode Synopsis
With election day less than two weeks away, today’s show centers upon the choices presented to those on the left. With even John Kelly calling Donald Trump a fascist in recent days, Kamala Harris’s vice president position making her a key enabler for Israel’s ongoing war, and the election results hanging on the votes of just a few swing states, leftist are sitting with an either or neither decision.
In a recent article for Convergence Magazine, Max Elbaum writes that a reelection of Trump would “lead to reinforcing all existing anti-democratic structures and adding new ones.” He goes on to argue, “a MAGA defeat will make it possible to maintain the democratic space that social justice movements—especially the Palestine solidarity movement, the labor movement, the voting rights movement, and the reproductive rights movement– need to grow substantially.”
Elbaum joins A Public Affair host Allen Ruff to discuss the piece and what is to be done, tactically and strategically, short and long term.
Max Elbaum is a member of the Convergence Magazine editorial board and the author of Revolution in the Air: Sixties Radicals Turn to Lenin, Mao and Che(Verso Books, Third Edition, 2018), a history of the 1970s-‘80s ‘New Communist Movement’ in which he was an active participant. He is also a co-editor, with Linda Burnham and María Poblet, of Power Concedes Nothing: How Grassroots Organizing Wins Elections (OR Books, 2022).
