Listen "Off the Cuff #2 | A Colleen Hoover Discussion (with Saba/@saidsabaaa)"

Episode Synopsis

Finally, 2CC is back from its unplanned hiatus! The situation looked rocky for a while, what with the dead computer and the initially malfunctioning replacement computer (I blame the Mercury Retrograde), but everything is in working order now. Here’s a new episode in the bonus 2CC series Off the Cuff, which Arthur recorded two weeks ago with his Discord book-club mate Saba. The two of them discuss the work of author Colleen Hoover, who typically writes contemporary romances but also pens thrillers every now and then. Two of her books, It Ends with Us and Verity, have already been covered on the podcast, and now you’ll get to hear the hosts give their opinions on even more of them. They also dive into topics like the cultural impact of Fifty Shades of Grey, the pressure that the Perfect Mother stereotype puts on moms, and step-sibling incest.

CoHo books read by Arthur:
• November 9
• Ugly Love
• It Ends with Us
• Verity
• Too Late
• Maybe Someday

CoHo books read by Saba:
• It Ends with Us
• Verity
• Reminders of Him
• Ugly Love

TW: domestic abuse, child death, child abuse, murder, quasi-incest revolving around step-siblings, a brief mention of an incest-tinged dynamic between blood siblings in a certain YA fantasy series
Spoilers start at 44:00
Note: after recording the podcast, Saba informed Arthur that he’d been mispronouncing her name the whole time. It’s “sab-AH,” not “SAH-ba.” Arthur is deeply sorry for making that blunder.
Note 2: Arthur double-checked the names after recording the podcast, and it turns out that both “Sebastian” and “Jonathan” are technically right. You’ll understand when you reach that part.
Note 3: I’d given my Good Word for Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers before John Mulaney let Dave Chappelle pop in for a surprise appearance at his recent show in Ohio and make transphobic and homophobic jokes. I just want to clarify that I still recommend the movie, but I don’t support the dive that Mulaney seems to be taking into his own toxic sludge pit. I’m not crazy about the gross connection I just learned this movie has to the original Peter Pan voice actor Bobby Driscoll, either. I recommend looking into his story, but only if you’re ready for tragedy.
Good Word:
• Saba: The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
• Arthur: Disney+’s Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers
