Jeaneen Tang, speech-language pathologist and mother of a special needs child. Along with her over 20 years of experience with working with children and adults with neurodiversity, she also has an 11 year old son who is neurodivergent. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and stroke at 13 months old. Her personal and professional relationship with this amazing population has forever changed her. She hopes to change their world too. She recently published her first book called PLAY DUMB & SABOTAGE. It addresses early language development and is meant to be helpful for parents, caregivers, and educators to work with young children and hopefully decrease the number of children needing speech therapy. Through preventative training, she believes we can achieve success and raise confident communicators. My big vision is to educate every new parent, caregiver, and educator who encounters young children and change their mindset and approach to interacting and communicating with children in order to decrease the number of children needing speech therapy. For many years, I've been wanting to write a book on simple strategies that could really change the way communication is introduced and practiced with young children and children with special needs. When my son was 13 months old, he suffered a traumatic brain injury and stroke. I became the parent of a special needs child. I've worked with him everyday of his life on communication. Today, he is 11 years old. He is so verbal, caring, and the most inspirational person I know. I thought, if my child could overcome so many language obstacles, so could many other children. I wanted to create a bigger impact on the world. I thought about going back to school to get a PhD in order to teach, but instead I decided to put that money towards writing a book. I didn't know how to write a book. The process seemed overwhelming until I discovered Self-Publishing.com. They helped guide me through the whole process from outlining my ideas to formatting the book, and even created the book cover design. The attention we put towards creating confident communicators will blossom into the great leaders we dream to see in our future. It starts with our children. It begins with how we relate to their environment and introduce them to the elements of conversation with the simplest eye contact, facial expressions, and gestures that progress to vocalizations, babbling with intonation, then to first words. From there, the possibilities are endless as long as we continue to provide opportunities for them to practice the use of language to mastery. However, we don't know what we don't know. New parents, caregiver, and educators need to first learn the skills and strategies needed to nurture language with babies and young children. My book, PLAY DUMB & SABOTAGE, is meant to be a handbook that anyone who interacts with babies and young children can pick up and easily read. It is packed with the knowledge and experience of my over 20 years as a speech-language pathologist. I've worked with children in early intervention, 0-3 years old, for most of my career. I've noticed that many of the children who needed speech therapy were otherwise normal developing. By utilizing the strategies in my book and doing parent trainings, the children were able to understand others and express themselves successfully.
