Listen "Episode 15: Dr. Bret Devereaux and the Importance of Public Facing Work in Academia"
Episode Synopsis
Welcome back to Yeah, I Got an F#%*ing Job with a Liberal Arts Degree.
This show is about the value of a liberal arts education. Jeff Crane, student of the liberal arts, environmental historian, and higher education administrator for the past 12 years, hosts a wide range of guests whose experiences as students of the liberal arts have shaped their lives in school, as professionals, and in their lives outside of their careers.
Bret Devereaux studies the intersection of ancient Mediterranean economies and militaries. His primary research interests concern the ways that the lives of ordinary people in the ancient world were shaped by the structures of power, violence and wealth under which they lived, as well as the ways in which those people in turn shaped the military capacity of the states that ruled them. He is an Assistant Teaching Professor at North Carolina State University.
Dr. Devereaux recently wrote an op-ed in The New York Times entitled Colleges Should Be More Than Just Vocational Schools and, like many of our episodes, today's conversation focuses on concerns around the future of humanities in the United States. Dr. Devereaux's research ties into many current events the world is experiencing now and he has many thoughts about possibilities for improvement in higher education.
