Gender based roles practiced over several generations and centuries has created a society with certain structure, order and continuity. On the flip side, the “should’s & must’s” of such a society, held as non-negotiable, have unleashed dysfunctional sides of power, authority and control. In India, this has further exacerbated processes of discrimination and denial, with women, urban and rural, finding themselves on the receiving end, even in 21st Century. The courageous few, however, have discovered their voice to experience equality, empowerment, dignity and purpose. How do such voices, often bordering on activism, manifest themselves? What outcomes do they create at a personal and societal level? What is the price & payoff?
