A violent act of self-destruction, recapturing beauty and youth in the name of self-loathing only gets worse the longer it persists. The horrific changes here show how societal uneasiness may appear in the body; when Sue decides she needs more time from Elisabeth, it's because Elisabeth won't accept who she is. It's a pleasant movie that enjoys all of its wild, crazy antics. Bright neon hues from the 1990s clash with ever-more-insane gore to create a surreal, easily disoriented depiction of Los Angeles. You're not going to find a delicate meditation on aging and beauty here, but this is a highlight rather than a flaw in the movie. The Substance is forthright regarding.
