Listen "Episode 17 -- Megan Burks"
Episode Synopsis
Megan Burks is the lead producer at MPR News and an integral member of the National Headliner and two-time Edward R. Murrow award-winning team that covered the killing of George Floyd and the trial of Derek Chauvin. On this week's "Where Ya At?" podcast, Megan shares her story of an early interest in Journalism, how an interest in Sociology at San Diego State guided her path into covering stories about education, immigration and community health. And then we do a deep dive about what it was like covering the biggest story of her career: organizing a newsroom; creating safe places for reporters to get food and water amidst protests; the pros and cons when you're a local news outlet and the national media arrives in your city; when the newsroom and community could finally exhale; and the important stories that continue three years later, including training high school students to become journalists who tell the stories of their own communities. For more information or to contact Megan, click here: https://www.mprnews.org/people/megan-burks "Where Ya At?" is a podcast focused on the School of Journalism and Media Studies at San Diego State University. Each week, during the Fall and Spring semesters, host Josh Suchon (Class of 1996) interviews alumni to learn about their experiences as college students, entering the workforce, key steps in their professional development, advice they'd give to current students, and details about how they covered a specific story.
