In this episode, Dr Nyundu chats with DJ GNGR (I.G. @djgngr ) about Afrobeats in Australia and Women taking up space in the world of Entertainment. DJ GNGR, also known as Abekan is a Sydney DJ and afternoon radio show host at Bondi Radio, with a weekly Afrobeats show, 'Get Gingered’. GNGR has years of musical experience, as a dancer and singer but eventually, found her passion for music and performance behind the decks.
Her Nigerian heritage rooted her in Afrobeat, Juju, high-life and traditional West African genres of music. GNGR moved to coastal city, Newcastle at a young age where she began to explore jazz, folk, indi-rock, hip-hop, soul and reggae music through performances in local bands.
Her eclectic taste and love for music allows experimenting with sound and the ability to cater to any party or event. GNGR is a high energy DJ with an infectious bubbly nature to keep you on the dance floor. Now based in Sydney, GNGR is one of the key players in the growing Afrobeats scene, with a residency at “The Box” - Australia's leading Afrobeats nights.
