Seth Vertelney brings you the American women’s soccer news you need to know today.The Portland Thorns increased their lead atop the NWSL standings with a 1-0 win over the Houston Dash on Saturday night. Sophia Smith, who just missed out on the U.S. Olympic roster, scored the game’s only goal.In the other NWSL game on Saturday, OL Reign defeated the Orlando Pride 2-0. After a hot start to the season, the Pride are now winless in five matches, and just saw their coach Marc Skinner leave the team to take over at Manchester United.Meanwhile at the Olympics, the U.S. women’s national team are preparing for their group stage finale on Tuesday against Australia. The U.S. needs just a draw to secure second place in their group, which would likely see them face off against either the Netherlands or Brazil in the quarterfinals.
