Just like in America today, politics in ancient Israel were complicated and divisive. In fact, Jesus’ enemies tried to use politics to get Jesus to sin. Of course, it didn’t work. Even in the realm of politics, Jesus knew exactly what to say. When asked whether believers in God should pay taxes, he said, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s” (Matthew 22:21). When Jesus said those words, he was teaching that we live in two different kingdoms at the same time. We live in the kingdom of God by faith in Jesus our Savior. We also live in an earthly kingdom with an earthly government put in place by
God himself. As politics swirl around us, I hope you’ll listen to this sermon based on Jesus’ words: “Give to Caesar What Is Caesar’s and to God What Is God’s.” God bless you!
