This week we focus on how we care for each other in community. Chapter five of Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians encourages the believing community to see where they are headed, not where they have been. He closes the paragraph we are studying with an exhortation to “encourage one another and build up one another . . . .” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). The community can overcome insecurities by encouraging (elsewhere translated: to call upon, exhort, admonish, persuade, beseech, entreat, implore, comfort, console, summon) and building up (elsewhere translated: to repair, construct, establish, edify, strengthen, to advance a person’s spiritual condition).
