Smithills Hall is set in  land on the edge of the West Pennine Moors, Smithills Hall is one of the oldest and best preserved manor houses in the North West of England.Over the years the original Medieval Hall has been added to, and provides a fascinating history of the people who lived there. The buildings include Tudor and Victorian wings, in addition to the Medieval Hall, and a private Chapel. The private chapel, reputedly established in AD 792, was rebuilt about 1520 by Andrew Barton and maintained by the families who lived there.  It has subsequently been added to, refurbished, suffered a major fire and restored.
