Most of us wake up each morning confident that we will see the end of the day. But sometimes something happens to remind us that that might not always be the case. Still reeling from the recent earthquake Japan is now confronted with another tragedy. A coastguard plane carrying aid has collided with a passenger jet engulfing it in flames. Sadly, five aboard the smaller plane have perished while remarkably everyone escaped from the burning jet. No doubt all boarded both planes confident that they would see the end of the day.



With great wisdom the Letter to James in the Bible reminds us of a great truth: ‘You say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city”. Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will do this or that.”’



Realising that we are not here by chance but by divine design makes all the difference and especially for those who trust in the resurrection of Jesus. We might not make it to see the end of the day but that doesn’t mean our lives will be over.
