Episode Synopsis

When 18-year-old Donovan Shears sent a text message to a number he had just made up he wasn’t expecting a reply. It was 1998 and he had his first mobile phone that could send text messages. So, he made up some numbers and fired off the simple greeting ‘hullo’. One recipient was another 18-year-old called Kirsty who thought the message was from a friend whose number she hadn’t stored on her phone, So, she replied with another simple greeting ‘hi’. Those first messages were followed by many more, and then a meeting and then a marriage and, in their own words, ‘years of love, laughter and partnership’.

In a similar way many years ago, I said ‘hullo’ to a God I wasn’t sure existed. To my surprise and in an unmistakeable way, he replied ‘hi’. Those first exchanges were followed by many more, and then a meeting and then my decision to live wholeheartedly for Jesus. It’s now been decades of love, laughter and partnership.

As you’re reading or listening to this you may never have thought much about God, in the same way Donovan Shears wasn’t thinking about a relationship when he sent that text. But like Donovan, if you dare to say ‘hullo’ you might be surprised to get a reply.
