I was reflecting the other day and thinking about how I got here. Who am I and why has my approach to “fitness” always been more that push-ups and squats? Why does the narcissism in fitness make we want to overthrow the tables like Jesus did in the house of the money changers.
When I was in elementary school, my mom was super active in the PTA and it seemed she was always walking the halls of the schools doing something. Of course I had no idea what she was doing, but secretly I loved having “my mom” at school.
I fell in love with running, jumping, tumbling and playing sports at an early age. When I was a kid, most of our play and sports was unorganized and led by us, the kids. Our folks didn’t drive us to the fields. We didn’t have uniforms. We didn’t usually have enough kids to field teams, so we made our own rules. We solved our own disputes and moved on.
Well one day we were playing kickball at lunch and something didn’t go my teams way and we had a dispute. We solved it, but in the mix I was called a dumb jock. I’m not even sure I knew what that meant, but it bothered me.
Later that day I saw my mom at school and all of the sudden I fell into my mom’s loving arms and began to sob. She didn’t know what was wrong, but through the tears I explained what happened and she consoled 8 year old Dane. She explained what it meant and assured me that I wasn’t and never would be a “dumb jock.” She challenged me to lead by example, play hard, study harder, think differently and unapologetically be myself.
Thank you mom for loving me unconditionally and setting me on a path to challenge the norm.
