Sponsored by the Optimist Club, the show was one of many small-venue stops that helped Elvis build a loyal regional fan base and fine-tune the electrifying stage presence that would soon catapult him to national stardom. And in 1958, while stationed in Germany, Elvis met 16-year-old typist Margit Buergin during a visit with his family at their hotel. She asked for a photo—and that simple request sparked a romantic relationship that would continue throughout his early months overseas.
