Listen "7. Beyond Academics to Relationships"
Episode Synopsis
In today’s episode, we get to spend time with Naomi and Steve Pedersen who are from Alberta, Canada. Naomi describes being homeschooled and sailing with her family from British Columbia, Canada to American Samoa when she was 11. She was worried about being behind academically by the time she returned to Canada but found that she was ahead, and she attributes this to the unique educational experiences and exposure she had while travelling. Our conversation quickly moved to talking about how the traditional education system is not set up well to help students become self-actualized and develop self-esteem and confidence, because peers are typically the most common influence in students’ lives. This conversation led to a lengthy discussion about self-actualization, resiliency, and especially social intelligence.Sir Ken Robinson TED TalkDo Schools Kill Creativity?Books and AuthorsBrene Brown - https://brenebrown.com/Atomic HabitsLearning SitesThe Magic School BusKhan AcademyIXLCourseraConcepts Social IntelligenceThis Golden Hour
