In an exclusive interview with TheRightDoctors on Emcure AICOG tv, Dr. Manish Pandya, professor at Head of The Department of Scientific Research Institute from Surendra Nagar, Gujarat spoke about anemia and its cure in India. This is what he said :
' Anemia is defined by W.H.O as less than 10 gm percentage of hemoglobin in postpartum period. It affects health of both mother as well baby and it has got lots of complications.
A lady who is talking 1 tablet of any iron preparation, hemoglobin increase will be seen after one month so you cannot prescribe oral preparation in a lady who is moderately or severely anemic.
For a normal routine pregnancy you can give oral tablet, but when you are talking severe anemia or moderate anemia at that time injectable formulations are available in market in form of iron sucrose.
We were using iron sucrose. When I was in medical college as a professor in HOD. We have done study of 500 postpartum patients. Every postpartum lady must have to take 2 injections of iron sucrose once she get discharged and we found that there is increase in hemoglobin
Second most important thing, what alternative you can give instead of FCM that is the blood transfusion we are giving a disease free increment into the hemoglobin of a lady by giving the simple Ferric carboxymaltose within 50 minutes and patient is behaving better
