The “R’ word is exceptionally offensive and hurtful. Its flippant and insensitive usage affects families, individuals, and the ways that society perceives people with disabilities and/or Down’s Syndrome. It is unacceptable to have this word in our lexicon in 2021; there is, and ALWAYS has been, a plethora of words to choose from instead of using the word “retarded.” For Episode 19, Suzanne interviews her close childhood friend, Lauren Ash, who has a 4-year-old son with Down’s Syndrome. She is an activist in the community and believes deeply in eradicating the usage of the “R” word.
