In the popular imagination, the De Soto Expedition through the American Southeast is a bunch of Spaniards bumbling about in search of Gold - which is only partially true. In reality, there were Spanish, Moroccan African, Portuguese, French, Italian, and English men (as well as Spanish serving women and enslaved Native American women!) on the expedition. They were quite organized, and De Soto was looking to found a colony (not just find gold.) While he was still very definitely looking for gold...things didn't quite work out for De Soto, due in large part to a Mississippian Paramount Chief named Tuscaloosa.
