Episode Synopsis

In this episode, Toni and Brad get the chance to chat to Lucas Capalbo, multi - award winning coach and lecturer in sport psychology and coaching at London Metropolitan University. Hailing from Brazil, the land of Joga Bonito, Lucas has had quite the career so far. As a coach, he has been a head coach in Sweden (Malmo), Italy (Milan), and London and an assistant coach in USA (Michigan).

On his academic journey he has picked up a BSc in Sport Sciences from Mackenzie University (Brazil) a dual MSc in Sport Psychology at the EMSEP (European Masters of Sport and Exec. Psychology) from the University of Lund (Sweden) and University of Leipzig (Germany) and a PhD in Kinesiology specialising in the psychosocial aspects of sports from Michigan State University (USA) where he was advised by Dr Daniel Gould (co-author of Foundations of Sport and Exerc. Psychology textbook, known as Weinberg and Gould) - sport psych people, if you know you know.

On this episode, we chat about Brazil's approach to developing players at the present date and areas they are looking to improve on - with reference to PL names like Jesus and Richarlison. As you may have picked up, Lucas has lived in many different places and learned many different things. We go into detail on what knowledge Lucas has picked up along the way and how this has impacted his coaching. On today's episode, we talk A LOT about culture and why it is so important to create cultures within football teams. On this topic, Lucas draws upon the different cultures he has been a part of and helps us to understand why it is important to be respectful and understand the culture of others. Another key topic in this episode is coaching psychology. Lucas gives us some tips into how this can be best embedded into a football team and reflects on the importance of boundaries as a psychologist who is also a coach. We go on to talk about his role as a 'Late Development Scout' at QPR and what this means before discussing sport psychology in America. Enjoy!
