They were built for speed and not as heavily armored or armed as a battleship.  Heavy Cruisers were named for major cities and state capitals.  Battleships were named for states. Light or (AA/Cruisers) were named for minor cities or towns. One ☝️ of their tasks was to screen or protect the carrier force. At the time, our aircraft carriers were among the fastest vessels 🚢 in the fleet.  (they had to be to launch aircraft)
