Listen "Sermon: Unlikely Adversaries"
Episode Synopsis
Have you ever experienced a situation where the nature of your relationship with another person changed, but the other person wasn't quite on-board with it yet? Most of us have been on the sending or receiving of this situation. Children often experience this as they transition into adulthood and see their parents struggle to treat them as young adults rather than small children. Coworkers can experience this struggle when a colleague gets promoted and now must be treated as a supervisor. We always hope these transitions will happen smoothly, but sometimes people have a hard time accepting us when we undergo a life change.
This is the situation many Christians find themselves in as they live their lives as new creations, re-born in Christ. They may not be interested in the same things or have the same priorities as before; as a result, their old friends may be confused... even angered. Why is my friend changing? What is his/her problem? It's not hate; they just don't understand. It's important that we all keep in mind who we serve when we decide to orient our lives towards God. The world, including friends and family, may be confused at the changes they see in our life, but we must remain strong and resolute in our calling. The old is gone and the new has come! Stay strong and understand that no matter who may present themselves as an adversary to your new way of life, God has called you to something better! Who knows... maybe those who look at your with a confused expression today are just going to be tomorrow's mission field.
