Listen "Wayfinder: The Hero Making Hero"
Episode Synopsis
Luke 8:1-3 NASB“Soon afterward, Jesus began going around from one city and village to another, proclaiming and preaching the kingdom of God. The twelve were with Him, 2 and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3 and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna…” Donald Miller’s book Building A Storybrand says every good story starts like this: “A character has a problem and meets a guide…” 1 According to Donald Miller, each story has 4 primary characters :o Victimo Villaino Heroo Guide (Hero Maker)Every hero needs a hero maker:Hero Maker: I think the best way to define a “hero maker” is a leader who faithfully makes heroes who make heroes who make heroes. True hero makers live in the shadows, often nameless but faithfully embracing the role of supporting character. Jesus’s Reproducible Hero Making Process:o He Pickso He Relateso He Prepareso He ReleasesCIT: Jesus made His followers more with Him than they would have beenwithout Him.Big Idea: There is more to church and there is more to me.1. As Our Hero, Jesus Picks & Relates to Us (Luke 8:1-3)1 Peter 2:9 NASB“…Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light…”Matthew 1:21 NASB“She will give birth to a Son; and you shall name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.””John 1:29 NASB“The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him, and *said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”Luke 8:1-3 NASB“Soon afterward, Jesus began going around from one city and village to another, proclaiming and preaching the kingdom of God. The twelve were with Him, 2 and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3 and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna…” Here is the key relational phrase: “The twelve were with Him, and also some women” Disciple making is relational.” – Stan ColemanActs 4:13 NASB“Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus.”Wayfinding: Witnessing + Walking With2. As Our Hero Maker, Jesus Prepares & Releases Us (Luke 9:1; 10:1; 11:1)Our issue with control is that we must let it go.Luke 9:1-2 NASB“Now He called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all the demons, and the power to heal diseases. 2 And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing.”- Jesus made heroes of His followers by intentionally spending time withthem and teaching them spiritual disciplines to sustain their inner life.Because it’s inner strength that helps us overcome external challenges.- Jesus never lived by the mentorship model: “Its caught and not taught.”- Jesus lived by the hero making model: “Its caught AND taught.”Luke 11:1 NASBIt happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, when He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.”- Confidence is borrowed from a hero maker until it is owned by me.- Jesus:o Picked them in Luke 5o Walked with them in Luke 8o Gave them His authority in Luke 9o Sent them to represent Him in Luke 10o Taught them how to pray in Luke 11- Jesus made His followers into heroes of the faith by trusting them to represent Him BEFORE He taught them everything they would need toknow.Luke 10:1 NASB“Now after this the Lord appointed seventy-two others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come.”- Jesus: picks, relates, prepares, and releasesCONCLUSION:BIG IDEA for the Series: There is more to church and there is more to me.Action Item for the Series: When you learn where you are in the TWCC process, take the next step.Ask for the Series: Don’t miss a message!
