Listen "EP 3 - What does it take to be Toastmaster of the Year with Daryl"
Episode Synopsis
I had an absolutely delightful conversation with Daryl, where we discussed leadership, feedback, contests, and the dedication required to earn the prestigious title of Toastmaster of the Year. This honor is truly well-deserved.Daryl joined Toastmasters in 2015 after moving to a new part of Sydney. He was looking for a local activity to join with his wife, Candice, and discovered a nearby Toastmasters club. Though he initially had no specific goals related to public speaking, he was immediately captivated by the engaging and supportive atmosphere. Daryl now participates in two clubs: Botany Bay Toastmasters and Stage Time. From the start, Daryl enjoyed giving speeches and quickly embraced the opportunities Toastmasters provided. His first speech, the icebreaker, was delivered during his third meeting. Despite some initial nerves, he found the experience exhilarating. Daryl's favorite type of speech is humorous, as he loves to entertain and make people laugh. His dedication paid off when he reached the district level in a humorous speech contest and secured second place, marking one of his proudest achievements.Daryl has also taken on various leadership roles within Toastmasters. He began with club-level positions like treasurer, secretary, vice president of education, and president, which provided valuable organizational experience. His most impactful leadership role was as an area director, where he oversaw four clubs, providing guidance and support. This role expanded his perspective and connected him with a broader Toastmasters community.A significant lesson Daryl learned is that public speaking is like a muscle that needs regular exercise. Continuous practice is essential to maintain and improve speaking skills. Toastmasters' structured and supportive feedback process has been crucial in his development, helping him identify strengths and areas for improvement.Daryl's advice for those considering Toastmasters is to give it a try by visiting a few local clubs to find the right fit. He emphasizes the importance of committing for at least six months to fully experience the benefits. Daryl believes that Toastmasters offers valuable growth opportunities for everyone, fostering both personal and professional development. He continues to find joy in speaking, learning, and mentoring new members.
