Listen "EP 1 - Debut of The Toastmaster's Experience with Jenny"

Episode Synopsis

Debut episode with Jenny, my mentor of 16 years.Jenny joined Toastmasters in 1993 in Sydney and was active for six years before life changes interrupted her membership. She rejoined in 2007 at Blue Mountains Toastmasters and has been a member since. Initially, she joined Toastmasters for social reasons and to improve public speaking skills, driven by her parents' encouragement. Jenny's first speech was an icebreaker about her life. Over time, she learned to write speeches for clarity and to stay within time limits, though she sometimes uses bullet points depending on her familiarity with the subject.Jenny finds value in various Toastmasters roles, particularly enjoying the role of Toastmaster (emcee) for its transferable skills. She has used these skills in her professional life, such as being an emcee at events and understanding room setup through the Sergeant-at-Arms role. Her leadership roles within Toastmasters, like being president and Vice President Education (VPE), have also been valuable in her career. She finds competing in Toastmasters both challenging and rewarding, especially enjoying evaluation and humorous speech contests. To improve impromptu speaking, she keeps a repertoire of stories ready. Jenny appreciates the diverse perspectives and ideas she encounters in Toastmasters and finds the feedback and evaluation process particularly beneficial.Jenny is a member of two clubs: Blue Mountains Toastmasters and Enhance Toastmasters. Each offers different benefits, from learning from new speakers to gaining advanced tips. She values the communication and leadership skills gained from Toastmasters, applying them in her private life and career. Jenny advises new members to join despite any initial fear, emphasizing the importance of personal progress over comparisons with others.
