Episode Synopsis
Sammy Rangel is the Program Coordinator for the SAFE Streets Outreach Program, dedicated to helping youth facing abuse, homelessness, and survival behaviors such as sex for food and shelter. He has reached thousands of youths and professionals, providing support and mentorship. Sammy was invited to the Summit Against Violent Extremism in Dublin in 2011, a global event hosted by Google Ideas, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Tribeca Film Festival.
The summit brought together former members of violent groups working to help youth avoid violent extremism. He is a sought-after speaker for law enforcement, corrections, treatment centers, and academic institutions. Sammy holds a BSW from Carthage College and an MSW from Loyola University, both with honors. He has received multiple awards for his work with youth, including the 2010 Ren Svanoe Youth Leadership Award and the Martin Luther King Award for Community Service. He has also worked as a Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor and provides mental health treatment at Racine Psychological Services. Sammy is
an adjunct professor at Gateway Technical College, MATC, and the Department of Transportation.
