Listen "4 | Brett Whitcomb, documentary filmmaker (The Rock-Afire Explosion) and a look back at Showbiz Pizza Place"
Episode Synopsis
Award winning documentary filmmaker Brett Whitcomb takes a look at the 1980's phenomena known as Showbiz Pizza Place. Showbiz came around in the early 1980's and was part pizza restaurant, part arcade. Each location also had a stage where an animatronic band known as The Rock Afire Explosion would perform. These robotic band characters were the mascots of the franchise. By the mid-80's, Showbiz was on top of the world. By the early 90's it was GONE. Showbiz and it's main competitor Chuck-E-Cheese merged and all locations were switched over to Chuck-E-Cheese restaurants for consistency. Kids who grew up in the 80's LOVED these places and many of them sincerely miss Showbiz! Well, thanks to the internet, memoribilia and stories about Showbiz are being swapped left and right. This documentary explores both the "Good old days" and the current state of some of the key players involved, as well as some of the "superfans" that are out there. This film is a classic and on my "must watch" list. Watch the trailer for the film here. Visit our sponsor ONNIT! (If you buy through this link it directly supports this program!)
