As we delve into the verses from one to eight, we see how John repeatedly refers to Christ as the light. For example, in verse five, John states, "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."  John emphasizes that despite the darkness in the world, the light of Christ cannot be extinguished. As we examine John's message further, we can see the significance of the word "light" and how it represents Christ.
