Today, I want to take you on a journey through the ways technology and society have shaped education, and how learning theories and standards continue to guide the way we teach.”Societal Changes Shaping Educational Technology “Education has changed dramatically over the years. We’ve moved from chalkboards and overhead projectors to laptops, tablets, and interactive whiteboards. The rise of the internet and mobile devices transformed how students learn, communicate, and collaborate. More recently, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed schools into virtual learning almost overnight. This moment highlighted both the potential of digital tools and the challenges of access and equity.”Learning Theories in Technology Integration “Alongside these changes, learning theories have shaped how we use technology. Early on, behaviorism influenced drill-and-practice programs designed to reinforce skills. Constructivism encouraged project-based tools, simulations, and apps that let students build knowledge through exploration. Social learning theory inspired collaborative platforms like Google Docs, Padlet, and video conferencing, where students learn by working together.”The Learning Theory That Guides Me Most “The theory that guides me most is constructivism. I believe students learn best when they are active participants in their own learning. In my classroom, I integrate digital storytelling, interactive reading apps, and collaborative tools that let students create, share, and reflect. These experiences make learning more meaningful and engaging.”Technology Standards in Lesson Planning “Technology standards, such as the ISTE Standards for Educators, give me a framework for planning lessons. They remind me to design activities that promote creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. When I align my lessons with these standards, I know I’m preparing my students not only to meet academic goals but also to develop essential 21st-century skills.”Closing “In the end, the history of educational technology shows us that while tools may change quickly, strong learning theories and clear standards keep us on track.
