Episode Synopsis

ONCE AN EMENY - Chapter 8At the Manhattan Project HQ, a trio of physicists read Oppenheimer a letter that is being circulated in the International Scientific community. Their conversation centers around the ethical properties of the project and the possibility for disaster, something that the authors feel should be addressed to the American public by Truman. Oppenheimer takes the news head-on warning them of the security issues and advising them on the strategy of ‘outsmarting’ the military brass and reactionary politicians by ensuring the complete success of the coming test in Alamogordo. Harry Truman is briefed on the projected number of Japanese casualties resulting from the detonation of Fat Man and Little Boy, admitting frustratingly, that he is dammed if he does and dammed if he doesn’t. On leave, Nobou visits his family in Japan vowing to them that the war will soon be over with the Japanese victorious. In the Brookings Harbor Cafe, scuttlebutt centers on Hitler and Mussolini’s suicides. Tommy Guthrie shares the news that his cousin has been killed in action. At the Oak Ridge facility an emergency shipment of Y12 is prepped and delivered to Knoxville airport and rushed to Santa Fe, where the MP courier has a close call with a local police officer. Chapter Eight ends the morning of the Trinity Test at Alamogordo. Oppenheimer delivers the famous quote from the Bagavida “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds” to General Groves, who nonetheless congratulates him on a, hopefully correct,  job well done. Thanks for listening folks, please dial us up next week for Chapter Nine.
