Listen "Greece's demographic challenge"
Episode Synopsis
Since 2011 Greece’s population has gradually been shrinking and getting older, and all the numbers show that this is a trend that will continue into the future. Prime Minister Mitsotakis even described the issue last June as a “ticking time bomb” for the country. This isn’t an issue that’s unique to Greece, as most European and Western countries are also looking to address similar challenges. Thodoris Georgakopoulos, a journalist and columnist who contributes frequently in Kathimerini, and the editorial director at DIANEOSIS - a Greek think tank, joins Thanos Davelis to break down Greece’s demographic challenge and what can be done to adjust to this reality and look to reverse this trend. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Demographic problem under the spotlightPopulation shrinking at alarming rateGreece’s demographic issueGreece’s Ticking Demographic Time BombNew EU sanctions put the squeeze on Russian oil smugglersEU approves 11th sanctions package against Russia over UkraineObama discusses democratic culture with SNF’s Dracopoulos in AthensND leader meets with ObamaTsipras thanks Obama for supporting Greece in tough times as US president
