Listen "Sourcing Quality News"
Episode Synopsis
In this episode, Jenny and Alex chat with Regan about medialens.org's mission and 20-year history of analysing news. Media Lens understands the centralizing nature of media serves corporate or special interests, not human interests. We discuss IOP Publishing's critical analysis of 17 news sources across five Western nations to determine their accuracy in communicating climate science to the general population. The study found the National Post and Daily Mail News to be misleading the public by presenting a narrative that natural weather cycles dominate the climate changes we are experiencing which is false. Then we review Regan and Blair Fix's work in applying a similar analysis to that completed by IOPScience using AI to compare content between Mike DeSouza's, The Narwhal, climate science publishing to that which was reported in the Ottawa Citizen, Edmonton Journal, and the Calgary Herald. The findings reflect what both Media Lens and IOPScience have determined, corporate interests are outweighing human interests in this area. The conversation concludes with a discussion on seeking, maintaining, and supporting "good faith" and the Polluter Pay Federation's motto: to support land owners in their rights according to the laws of the land here in #Alberta.
