In this study of King David’s life, we’ll highlight six voices, or influences, to which David responded. Those same influences, or relationships, are present in our lives today! How we respond to each voice shapes our character and determines our position—hopefully to be where God has designed—in the right place at the right time! In this lesson, we highlight the voice of experience, counsel or advice. David received unsolicited advice from King Saul. “Then David’s question was reported to King Saul, and the king sent for him. “Don’t worry about this Philistine,” David told Saul. “I’ll go fight him!” “Don’t be ridiculous!” Saul replied. “There’s no way you can fight this Philistine and possibly win! You’re only a boy, and he’s been a man of war since his youth.” 1 Samuel 17:31-33  The story continues with, “But David persisted,” and when Saul countered David’s claim with more expertise and an offer for David to use his armor, David once again responded from his faith in God and his confidence in what God had done through him before. David resisted King Saul’s pressure and refused to move from what he knew God could do through him. How do we know when to accept or reject the counsel or advice from others? We know based on what that advice is founded upon—God’s Word, which is God’s Wisdom or man’s wisdom, which in Saul’s case, was based on fear.
