Food Rebels Part 2

Listen "Food Rebels Part 2"

Episode Synopsis

Dr. Opie talks about Food Rebels who he calls people who went against the grain and led or participated in movements in the US that championed ending food insecurity and eating nutrient-rich food. These entrepreneurs, organizers, educators, and nationalists, among other positions were leaders in the long struggle for independence, health, and the struggle against the US caste system. These food rebels have not had their contributions celebrated proportionate to their impact on society; this episode about Marcus Garvey(1887-1940)and his five-year plan for Black economic independence aims to change that. Part of Garvey's plan called for establishing farms for growing fruits, vegetables and dairy products, a food canning operation, and a chain of grocery stores, and restaurants.
