This is part 1 of a series entitled Food in African American Literature. In Part 1 Fred talks about the relationship of the field to his earlier research and publications. This audio series is a contribution to the study of literature, foodways, and African-American history. The series unpacks places where food has been made, sold, and eaten¬ in important books in African American Literature including, discusses places where food has been made, sold, and eaten¬ in the African American literary canon, notably: Twelve Years a Slave: Narrative of Solomon Northup…; Frederick Douglass, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass; James Weldon Johnson’s The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man; Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man; Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God; James Baldwin’s Notes of a Native Son and No Name in the Street; and Ntozake Shange’s Sassafrass, Cypress, and Indigo: A Novel.
About Dr. Opie
Dr. Frederick Douglass Opie earned a gold medal as a member of the 1990 US National Lacrosse Team. He is a professional speaker, Babson Professor of History and talking head contributing to stories journalist and documentary filmmakers produce. He shares his research interest and musings as a blogger and the producer and host of The Fred Opie Show.
