Episode Synopsis
In this episode I am hanging out with biologist Jay Herrala who is the Fisheries Program Coordinator for the Streams Investigations Branch of Kentucky Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. We discuss the different strains of walleye and some history of them in Kentucky; Current stocking programs and the bodies of water that receive walleye each year; Why some streams don't receive walleye. Habitat preferences for each strain and how that determines stocking location; How to tell the difference between a Sauger and a Walleye; The "shocking up/egg harvesting" phase; The countless hours of work that result in the mind blowing number of walleye stocked each year; The time it takes walleye to reach "stockable" size; The state record walleye (21lbs 8oz) caught back in the 50's; daily limit, possession limit, and slot limits; Responsible harvesting; and future plans for walleye in Kentucky.
