Revenue is something every company wants needs more of and hiring great people is a part of how you do that. Today's guest is Chris Gannon and he's going to help us understand how to survive as an entrepreneur over tumultuous times (as collectively experienced by many business owners over the past year), how to hire the right people for your team, and how to build a culture of revenue, which is a combination of marketing, sales, and customer success. Chris is the founder of Captivate Talent, an agency placing top revenue professionals at growth-stage technology companies.
Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:
What is a revenue team?
How to survive as an entrepreneur over tumultuous times
How to attract the right people and make sure they’re in the position for success
What culture really means
Episode Highlights:
What is a Revenue Team?
To be a successful revenue team, sales, marketing, customer success have to work in tribe with each other. And these are three main buckets in an organization where the lines that distinguish between them get blurred.
How to Survive as an Entrepreneur Over Tumultuous Times
As a leader, if things are an absolute mess falling apart and probably have $1 in the bank account, you just have to have that smile on your face, look that fear in the eye, and hold it together. Because if you don't hold it together, your team's not going to be able to hold it together. And if you're unsure about the future, they're going to be unsure about the future. So you just have to step up in times like this.
But you also don't want to blindside people. You just don't want to show them you're afraid. You cannot show that fear and that's very different than misleading your team. So you also have to be able to communicate to them your situation so there wouldn't be any surprises.
How to Attract The Right People and Make Sure They’re in a Position for Success
First, you have to hire people that you trust and that trust you because that's something that will weed itself out very quickly. So you have to have trust built into your remote culture. In sales and marketing, you have to find people that are complementary to each other or also complimentary to you as the founder.
No one needs a VP of Sales as your first-hire. Instead, you have to look at your budget first. Then look at your inbound leads and having a good brand presence. You don't want somebody to just get a phone book out and start calling. You want to hire somebody experienced enough, but also tactical enough –somebody who has the strategy side of things but also wants to roll up their hands.
Define what makes your company special because that's going to attract the right people. And then when you move them through the process, you actually have to make sure you have a defined process.
