Listen "The web3 project that bought an English Football Club with plans of taking them to the Premier League."
Episode Synopsis
In this week's episode, I speak with Preston Johnson, the founder of WAGMI United and co-Chairman of Crawley Town Football Club. Why am I interviewing the chairman of a professional sports team? Well, they’re doing something a little different. Very different, in fact. This is the story of how a web3 project raised funds to buy an English football team and has grand plans to take them from the fourth tier of English football, all the way to the top. There's nothing conventional about the way they're running the club. The fans have a say in the players that the club buys, who they bring in as backroom staff, and can even vote to fire Preston as Chairman if the club isn’t promoted to the next division within two years. Regardless of what you think about crypto, these examples are a great step forward for a local fanbase. And let’s face it, if you’ve witnessed some of the ways in which English football clubs have been run in the more conventional sense in the past few years, it’s clear that something needs to be done differently. Will the WAGMI United group be able to turn around the fortunes of Crawley Town? Only time will tell. If you’re a fan of sports, have an interest in how crypto is being applied in the real world, or well, if you’re a Crawley Town FC fan, I think you’re going to enjoy this episode.
