Listen "Silence in a Year Day 46 Silence of the Eyes"

Episode Synopsis

Cardinal Sarah talks about how images are drugs that we can no longer do without because they are everywhere.  It makes me think of how often we are more present to the screens around us than God’s Presence or the people that God puts along our path to encounter.  We are assaulted by images everywhere we go.  At restaurants there are sporting events on the screens around us, we go to the gym and there are various screens turned to random channels.  We eat dinner with our families with the news on.  We go to get our car serviced and the news is blaring there too.  We constantly are scrolling, checking social media and texts, and playing mindless games on our little screens.  We can’t help it, it has become part of our society, part of our lives, it is hard to give it up.  Images have assaulted our society.  God calls us to close our eyes, to shut off the devices, to unplug and be more present to Him in the Abyss of His Love.  Some of my deepest times of prayer were in Spain when I would close my eyes and contemplate God.  Since I don’t understand Spanish, I think I was able to fall deeper into the personal abyss that Cardinal Sarah talks about.  One time, when I received Jesus in the Eucharist, I don’t know what happened other than I had closed my eyes, my mind went blank, I had a deep sense of peace that was only disturbed by the proclamation of the word Oremos!  Once I opened my eyes, it took me a while to figure out where I was.  But the opportunity for that interior silence allowed me a deeper solitude with God.
