In an attempt to unravel the role of cryptochrome proteins in the kingdom of life, Prof Corrochano, from University of Seville, Spain, talks about his recent research on DASH-type cryptochromes which are showing DNA repair activity, a function never attributed to them before. We discuss how similar proteins can have different functions with varying emphasis on biochemistry, structural biology and evolution.
