Listen "Asking Powerful Questions in Coaching"
Episode Synopsis
Effective questioning skills can help coaches create meaningful interactions with clients; however, it’s not as complicated as one might think. Simple, open-ended questions are best for gaining insight into clients’ thoughts and feelings. Coaches should remain present and focus on their clients; approaching the session with topics in mind can help guide the conversation, but one must be mindful not to project one’s own biases onto the client while also allowing space for the client to lead the session and determine what will serve their needs best at that moment.
Noticing cues such as pauses or changes in body language can provide valuable information about clients’ emotions and underlying motivations. Coaches who are able to ask powerful questions and expand their client’s, as well as their own, knowledge, are more likely to bring about change. Coaches should trust the process; it’s a simple dialogue that can lead in unexpected directions. The most impactful coaches are those who not only ask questions of their clients but also engage in self-reflection and personal growth.
